Cuia Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil

The Pluriversity Abya Yala’s Anticolonial Cuia in Campinas organized by the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and the Tainã Cultural Center took place from May 16 to 21, 2025, in Campinas and Limeira. Under the theme “Articulations of Black and Indigenous Epistemologies and Technological Dissidences,” the activities brought together students, activists, and researchers to explore intersections between ancestral knowledge systems, community agency, and critical approaches to technology. The opening activities included participation in CryptoRave 2025, a major international event on encryption, privacy, and digital freedom.

A central gathering was held at UNICAMP’s Garden of Ancestral Knowledge, a space dedicated to honoring Indigenous, African, and Quilombola traditions. There, members of UNICAMP’s Indigenous Collective, faculty, and invited researchers—such as Sophie Toupin and Yunuen Torres Ascencio—reflected on memory, community media, anticolonial perspectives, and digital critique. These exchanges emphasized the role of ancestral epistemologies in shaping more just and plural ways of understanding education, communication, and technology.

The visit to the Tainã Cultural Center deepened the dialogue by highlighting autonomous community practices, including Baobáxia, the Baobab Route, and the center’s community garden. Participants also heard the story of Cherán, a self-governed Indigenous community in Mexico, shared by Torres Ascencio. Discussions on technological dissidence followed, featuring researchers working on feminist infrastructures, data protection, anti-surveillance strategies, and transfeminist digital care. The cycle concluded with Indigenous short-film screenings at Cine Vagalume, followed by a debate and collective gathering with Indigenous students and university research groups.
