Reia, Jess

Jess Reia is an Assistant Professor of Data Science at the University of Virginia and a NonResident Fellow at the Center for Democracy & Technology in Washington, D.C. They work primarily on data justice, urban governance, and technology policy transnationally. Before joining UVA, they were appointed Mellon Postdoctoral Researcher at McGill University and BMO Fellow at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Montreal in Canada. From 2011 to 2019, Reia worked at the Center for Technology & Society at FGV Law School in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, leading projects on access to knowledge and privacy in Latin America and the BRICS. Recent projects include a Trans Digital Rights framework, the environmental impacts of big data in the auto industry, the influence of corporate power in Brazilian cities, and perceptions of what is considered valid data in evidence-based policymaking. They are the author of Urban Music Governance: What Busking Can Teach Us about Data, Policy and Our Cities (University of Chicago Press).
