Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM)

The Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) is a public higher education institution founded in 1909, located in Manaus and throughout the state of Amazonas, with six campuses in total, and additional poles of distributed Indigenous education in São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Autazes, and others. It is one of the main universities in the North Region of Brazil that plays a key role in the academic, scientific, and cultural development of the Amazon. UFAM offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate (master’s, doctoral, and specialization), and outreach programs across various fields of knowledge, such as STEM, biological sciences, social sciences, humanities, and health.

The university is particularly recognized for its research focused on relevant issues in the Amazon region, such as biodiversity, public health, sustainability, and ecology. Its main campus in Manaus has an extensive infrastructure, including libraries, research centers, laboratories, and cultural spaces.

UFAM is also known for its commitment to social inclusion, providing access to higher education for diverse communities, such as Indigenous peoples and riverine populations. Its licenciate degree to graduate Indigenous Teachers has more than 16 years of existence and has received the highest evaluation by the Ministry of Education in 2024. As a public institution, UFAM is tuition-free, promoting quality education and encouraging scientific research and innovation, with a focus on sustainable development in the Amazon and the global impact of its initiatives.
