Autonomous Communal University of Oaxaca (UACO)

The Autonomous Communal University of Oaxaca (UACO) is a unique institution that reflects a collective and organized effort to academically and systematically study the communal practices embedded within various Oaxacan communities in Mexico. Established to honor the region’s rich cultural and social heritage, UACO is committed to preserving and advancing the traditional ways of life that have been passed down through generations in the Indigenous villages of Oaxaca.

The university focuses on the cultural, linguistic, economic, social, and political practices that shape the communities, which are a blend of colonial history and Indigenous resistance — sometimes subtle, sometimes overt. UACO seeks to explore these practices through an interdisciplinary approach, offering academic programs that engage deeply with the experiences of Oaxacan peoples, particularly the Zapotec and Mixtec communities.

By combining traditional knowledge with academic inquiry, UACO serves as a space for reflection and empowerment, allowing students to critically engage with their cultural heritage while contributing to the ongoing process of community development. The university’s focus on communal life and local history makes it a distinctive institution, one that honors both the past and the present struggles of Indigenous communities, while
promoting social and cultural sustainability.
