STS Seminar Series: Technology Appropriation

The Science and Technology Studies Seminar Series is a weekly event promoted by the Department of Science, Technology, and Society at Virginia Tech. On April 5th 2024, as part of the Abya Yala Pluriversity Week, the seminar featured P’urhépecha activist Yunuen Torres, Cherán, México; Sociology professor Diego Vicentin, UNICAMP, Brazil; and Computer Science professor Shaddi Hasan, Virginia Tech. The panel focused on self-determination of Indigenous peoples and sociotechnical approaches to technology and  technology appropriation, or how to acquire knowledge about technological artifacts, understanding their functions and domesticating them to ends that allow for self-determination. Cherán is internationally known for the role of women in their fight to protect their territory
