The first edition of Cuia Toronto took place on October 5, 2026, at Toronto Metropolitan University as part of the 3rd Critical Internet Governance Symposium, under the theme “Digital Solidarity.” Titled Anticolonial Cuia in Toronto: The Costs of AI, the gathering established a space for countercolonial dialogue, knowledge exchange, and critical discussions about artificial intelligence, human rights, and Earth rights. The Cuia brought together researchers, scholars, students, Indigenous communities, and other participants through keynote presentations, panel discussions, Indigenous Foodways Tours, and community-based workshops. These activities explored Black, feminist, Indigenous, and queer perspectives on artificial intelligence, alongside questions of digital governance, community technologies, and alternative approaches to science and technology.
Cuia Toronto emerged through collaborations involving Com Cult SA, the Indigenous Friends Association, the University of Toronto, the Critical Infrastructure Lab, and the Abya Yala Pluriversity. Through these connections, the Cuia creates opportunities for dialogue across communities, disciplines, and territories, challenging dominant approaches to technology and knowledge production. As part of the broader Abya Yala Pluriversity initiative, Cuia Toronto contributes to building spaces for collective learning, countercolonial perspectives, and digital solidarity.
